It’s that time of year for spooks, witches, and the scary things that haunt us in our nightmares. It is Halloween, where the macabre makes us want to tap dance, the maudlin has us breaking out into a showstopper, and murder has us stealing an extra bow. Occasionally, there is a Broadway musical that comes along, reveling in the gross, gruesome, gory, and mentally deranged, Today, we are celebrating those Broadway musicals that capture the spirit of Halloween.
With IT poised to open in just a few weeks, threatening to terrorize us all and turn a whole new generation of people against clowns, I thought it would be fun to look at the ten scariest films based on Stephen King books and short stories. Any single of these is guaranteed to scare the crap out of you.
It rained a little on Broadway this week with the passing of Barbara Cook, a legend of the Broadway musical whose clarion soprano and boundless emotion took songs into the outer stratosphere. Cook, who has been a presence on the Broadway scene since the 1950s in both musicals and concerts, died on August 8 at the age of 89 after a long illness. Her legions of fans are mourning the loss of the great lady who, among myriad roles, originated the role of Marion Paroo in the 1957 production of The Music Man.
