It’s that time of year for spooks, witches, and the scary things that haunt us in our nightmares. It is Halloween, where the macabre makes us want to tap dance, the maudlin has us breaking out into a showstopper, and murder has us stealing an extra bow. Occasionally, there is a Broadway musical that comes along, reveling in the gross, gruesome, gory, and mentally deranged, Today, we are celebrating those Broadway musicals that capture the spirit of Halloween.
Halloween is just around the “coroner” to quote the Addams Family lyric you’ll encounter later in this playlist and I thought it would be fun to assemble a musical theatre playlist that embraced all things wicked and wonderful. Maybe this group of musical ditties will help put you in the mood for ghosts, goblins, and treak-or-treat.
Broadway musicals are often full of happy characters who cannot wait to sing their heart out or tap a little routine for you. The generalities people attach to Broadway as a happy place of song and dance are often, just that, generalities. Those of us who truly love the art form know differently. Musicals are often filled with complex characters without altruistic motives.
