Book Review: Harold Prince — Sense of Occasion

The new book Sense of Occasion by theatrical director and producer Harold Prince is a memoir wherein he explores his vast career in theatre starting with The Pajama Game and then brings us up to date with his plans for the future. It is a curious book. For the first half, it is a reprint of Prince’s 1974 biography Contradictions: Notes on Twenty-Six Years in the Theatre, with a page or two at the end of each chapter adding additional reflections and making new observations that only time and distance can make space for. The second half is a continuation of Prince’s story, walking us through all his productions post Candide (1974), giving most of the shows in that section the similar treatment of telling us how they came to fruition. More exciting than the fascinating history itself are Prince’s candid observations and assessments of his own work. He is his own worst critic, but he is also a conscientious man who takes his obligations to artists and audiences seriously.

Send in the Clown: A Review of the film IT

Well, here is the good news. If you are looking for a moderately frightening film with a killer clown and almost zero character development, then the screen adaptation of Stephen King’s mammoth novel IT will certainly achieve the chill factor that you seek. If, however, you are a fan of the thrilling book, revel in its themes and carefully constructed characters, and truly hoped for a film that could capture the essence of King’s tome, you will have to look elsewhere. This film has too much clowning around and not much by way of substance.

Are the Muppets Still Relevant?

I was reading through an article about how Disney World might jettison its Muppet 3-D Theatre from its Hollywood Studios park (this alone broke my heart), and the piece was accompanied by a string of comments debating the relevancy of the Muppets, not just in the parks, but as a part of our culture in general. It had never occurred to me that the Muppets would ever go out of fashion, that what I had always considered timeless did come with an expiration date. This led me to my own internal discussion “Are the Muppets still relevant?”

Game of Thrust: How GoT Misfired This Season

Caution: Spoilers Ahead

Game of Thrones has always been brimming with action and intrigue, even when it occasionally moved at an excruciatingly slow pace. This is arguably why Season 7 feels like a race to the finish line. When juxtaposed against the previous seasons, and combined with the fact that there are significantly less episodes than in prior years, Game of Thrones in Season 7 is a freight train coming off the tracks.
