Ambrose? My Fair Lady Cast: Our “Loverly” Reactions

By now, we have all learned who will play the leads in the Bartlett Sher helmed My Fair Lady revival at Lincoln Center this spring. I must say, I was a bit surprised and somewhat underwhelmed, if only that I had some very strong opinions about who I would like to see cast. In the end, the cast we have has certainly proven themselves, time and again, on stage and screen. Lauren Ambrose will play Eliza Doolittle, Nobert Leo Butz will be her father Alfred P. Doolittle, and Harry Haden-Paton will play the plum role of Professor Henry Higgins. Joining them, in what is perhaps the most exciting casting choice is Diana Rigg as Henry’s mother, Mrs. Higgins.

The Big Deal About Big Mouth

Do you remember in late elementary school when they separated the boys and girls during gym class as told us all about how our bodies were about to change? Do you remember the fear, humiliation and spine-tingling horror that washed over us all when we were about to go for a swim in the shark-infested waters known as hormones? It's hard to know how to feel about the new Netflix original series Big Mouth, a cartoon that brutally (and comically) explores the mine field that is puberty, but I will tell you that the program captures every ounce of mind-numbing embarrassment that accompanies the honor.

Giving Them What They Want: The Best of David Yazbek

With The Band’s Visit readying itself for its Broadway opening on November 9, I am reminded by how much I love a David Yazbek score. For me, Yazbek comes the closest to bringing the old-fashioned Broadway musical comedy sound into the contemporary musical. His work is tuneful, character-driven, brimming with emotion, and always laced with fun. Distinctly working in his own style, it is also clear that he is influenced by the likes of Cy Coleman, Jule Styne, and Frank Loesser. Today, I want to celebrate Yazbek’s work and revel in how it makes me feel. I am certain we will be adding some songs from The Band’s Visit to this list very soon, but for now, here are ten songs by Yazbek that we already love.

"America" — Broadway Song of the Day

With all the anti-immigrant sentiment floating around our there, I thought that I would celebrate a Broadway song that is all about the reasons behind people coming to America. True, the song I'm referring to reveres "America" in contrast to Puerto Rico (which is, incidentally, in America), but the sentiment is the same. We are supposed to be a nation of promises and hope. Thinking about Puerto Rico today post-hurricane and distressed that the powers that be have forgotten that they are a part of our nation. My heart also aches about how we don't include he human race in our fold, but we are a world of haves and have-nots, and that attitude tends to prevail.
