Tony Nominations Are Here: No Real Surprises
The 2018 Tony Award nominations are here and the big surprise of the season is that there are no real surprises. It has been a fairly predictable, even-keeled season and the Tony nominations reflect that. In fact, the only real surprise of 2017-2018 is the success of SpongeBob SquarePants: The Musical, which, a year ago, most of us had written off as a bad idea (or at least saw it as a peculiar curiosity). Enough time has passed since it opened and audiences embraced that we are not surprised to find it well-represented amongst the nominees. No shocks that The Band’s Visit has fared well. The David Yazbek piece was the toast of the town last year Off-Broadway and its transition to Broadway has only garnered the piece additional awards momentum and critical acclaim. Both SpongeBoband The Band’s Visit were guaranteed Best Musical nominees two months ago and the real question is which new musicals of the season would round out the category? It’s been a bit of a toss-up between Mean Girls, Frozen, Escape to Margaritaville, and The Prince of Broadway for the coveted additional slots, none of which were guaranteed locks (Summer: The Donna Summer Musical was always going to be a stretch). Now, we have our answers.
