Gifts of Love: Holiday Wish List for Broadway Enthusiasts

Whether we want to admit it or not, the holidays are here. Since tickets to Hamilton seem like an unlikely present this Christmas or Hanukkah (unless you bought them six months ago or don’t mind waiting until 2020 to see it), the Broadway musical enthusiast will have to look elsewhere for gift ideas to put on their wish list. Fortunately, there are a great many wonderful and unique options guaranteed to make every musical theatre fan a happy camper this holiday season.

“I’m Infected”: Cry-Baby – Original Studio Cast Recording

The original 2008 Broadway production of Cry-Baby may not have been a hit on Broadway, having run a short 68 performances and garnering a handful of Tony Award nominations before closing. Based on the popular 1990 John Waters film starring Johnny Depp, Ricki Lake and Polly Bergan, the stage production seemed to come on the scene hoping to capture the same momentum that another Waters’ adaptation, a little show called Hairpsray, had achieved (it had a book by Hairspray’s Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan). This was not to be and the most unfortunate part of its early demise was that it never received an original cast recording.

Until now.

The House of Broadway Musical Flops

One of the exciting things about seeing a Broadway show is the theatre that houses a production. Many Broadway houses have been around for almost one-hundred years. Ensconced within these artistic dwellings are the ghosts of shows gone by, a rich history of great, long running masterpieces ... and the occasional flop. Some theatres have had a lucky streak of success: The St. James, The Winter Garden, The Majestic. Others, have, for one reason or another, been a doomed house. Pouring through my notes, there is one theatre that has had more than its share of flops in its 30-year tenure as a Broadway house: The Marquis Theatre.
