TV Tidbit: The Bloodhound Gang

The PBS series 3-2-1 Contact debuted on PBS in 1980, introducing young viewers to the multitude of fun facts surrounding the growing world of science. Within the series (which was a bit like Mr. Wizard meets Nova), was a series of shorts called The Bloodhound Gang. A bit like Scooby-Doo, this live-action mystery program featured three kids who solved mysteries, usually turning to science to get the bottom of each case.

TV Tidbit: The Neighborhood of Make-Believe

From 1968 to 2001, one of PBS’s most-beloved and celebrated shows for kids was Mister Rogers Neighborhood. Featuring the kindly Fred Rogers who invited kids to join him in little house for play, learning, and self esteem building, the low-key was a staple in the home of anyone who had children. One of the highlights of the show was when Mr. Rogers would take the models of The Neighborhood of Make-Believe off his kitchen shelf and set them up for an adventure to the colorful little village where puppets and people interacted and everyone learned how to treat each other with love and kindness. It was a special place in all our childhoods, as Mr. Rogers sent us down the trolley tracks (the man had a trolley in his house!) for our daily lesson in fun and play.

TV Tidbit: Are You Being Served?

When I was in college, my housemate introduced me the British sitcoms (or Brit-coms, as they are often referred) that PBS re-ran, usually late at night or on weekends. Of the many we watched, my favorite has always been Are You Being Served? which ran on Britain’s BBC One from 1972-1985. Are You Being Served? centered around the day-to-day goings-on in the ladies’ and gentlemen’s clothing floor of the Grace Brothers Department Store. Though it ran for thirteen years, only 70 episodes of the sitcom was produced.
