Celebrating Marin Mazzie

It breaks my heart to be sitting here and writing a remembrance of Marin Mazzie who passed away this last Thursday at the age of 57. Mazzie was a luminescent star of the Broadway musical stage, investing heart and soul into every song that she sang and every role that she embodied. There was something ethereal and magical in her voice, lifting us out of our daily lives and transporting us to somewhere near heaven.

The Bewitching Betty Buckley

Like most of the people who grew up in the 70s and 80s, my introduction to Betty Buckley came through the television drama Eight is Enough. Buckley played Abby Bradford, forever redesigning the world's perceptions of stepmothers everywhere with a portrayal of patience, kindness and understanding. Little did we children of the 70s and 80s know that Buckley was an established musical theatre talent who, after Eight is Enough, would evolve into one of the most beloved stars on Broadway.

I remember when my parents sat me down at age 15 to tell me that they were getting a divorce. They had told me to pretend like nothing had happened so that I didn't upset my little brother and sister. Holding in tears, I walked into my bedroom and turned the record player on. The original cast recording of Camelot was on the turntable and the title song was playing.
